A reflection on leadership in heavy times

Some days are heavier than others. Since last night, I’ve been carrying the weight of things I can’t control. That’s hard for me. By nature, I am a doer—a fixer—a barrier breaker. That’s how I’ve survived.

But leading in an environment where so much is out of our hands, where decisions that impact our communities are made without care for the real people affected—it takes its toll.

Representing marginalized people in these times is not easy.

I struggle with letting go, with resisting the urge to push my way into every conversation and convince decision-makers that their choices are hurting us. The hardest part is knowing some simply don’t care.

So I’m learning to sit with the discomfort. To be still. To look for the opportunity in the adversity, to carve out a new path forward.

And one thing is crystal clear: it’s time to build our own safety net. To strengthen our own systems of support. To take care of each other when the powers that be will not.

Because at the end of the day, we are all we’ve got—we are stronger together.

👉 That’s why I’m committed to building spaces, programs, and support systems led by and for directly impacted people. If you believe in this work, I invite you to walk with us, share this message, and help us create the safety net our communities deserve.
